File QMPlus Quizzes Q&A - A. Fink

Alex Fink will run a QMPlus Quizzes Q&A Session on Thu 20 Aug 14:00 on MS Teams.  Please read the attached guidance in preparation for the session.

Bonus Tip (courtesy of R. Harris!):

One thing I've recently discovered which may be useful to others is that there's a nice LaTex package (https://ctan.org/pkg/moodle?lang=en) for generating moodle quiz questions.  Unfortunately it doesn't do questions with random numbers but for everything else it seems pretty neat.

I should say that, despite the claims in the documentation for the moodle package, I couldn't get \P to work as a macro for \mathbb{P} but at least with a text editor you can easily do search-and-replace, everything else seemed to work as advertised, and the pdf summary of the whole quiz is pretty convenient.

Comment by SB: For some LaTeX installations, this appears to work immediately, while others might need some debugging.  Thank you Rosemary and Alex for investigating this!

Lecture Recording Demos - Kaltura, BBC, etc. File Quickstarts: Kaltura, Blackboard Collaborate - S. del Bano Rollin, J. Ward

Sebastian del Bano Rollin and Justin Ward will each give 15-minute quickstart talks on using Kaltura and Blackboard Collaborate, in a Q&A/Discussion Session on Fri 28 Aug 14:00 on MS Teams.

This overview might save you a bit of time, especially if you are still debating what to use for either pre-recorded or live components of your module and want to see whether either Kaltura or BBC offer what you need.

Bonus content (courtesy of Juan Valiente Kroon):

People are welcome to look at my recordings. In particular I would suggest to look at parts of

This is lecture 6 and I have finally got a grip of the technology. The video is long (40 minutes), so I would suggest looking at parts of it: the first minutes and the around minute 36 where I show some simulations. The recording was done with the free software OBS which does more or less the same as Kaltura’s recordings. The nice thing is that it allows to put several video channels at the same time. Around minute 36, I show off and I have three: one with the output of the iPad where I write things, another with my image talking, and a third one with a Mathematica window. Everything was recorded at the same time. The size of the video is not too large and uploaded quickly to QMplus.

Folder Skills Points System

All full-time PhD students at Queen Mary are expected to take part in two weeks of transferable skills training activities per academic year (part-time students should complete a pro-rata rate of training as appropriate). Suggested activities include attending and presenting at conferences, participating in or helping to organise journal clubs, writing groups and seminar series, and attending training courses or workshops. Selection of appropriate activities and courses should form part of your relationship with your supervisor. The training and development activities you take part in should be recorded using the Skills Points System

See the files in the folder below for useful information on how to use the Skills Points System

Folder PhD leave

  • For full-time PhD students the annual holiday entitlement is 30 working days plus the eight UK public holidays and the four QMUL closure days. Holiday entitlement is pro-rata for part-time students and for parts of a year.
  • PhD students should agree their holiday periods with their primary supervisor and note this in the Supervisor Log on MySIS. PhD leave cannot be approved on MyHR so should not be requested through this system.
  • PhD students should also log absences other than annual leave (e.g. attendance at conferences, research visits, etc) on the Supervision Log, after agreeing these with their supervisor.

Folder PhD funding for travel/conferences

  • If you require funding for travel/conference please speak directly to your Head of Group or PI to request approval for funding and agree the amount BEFORE submitting any claims to the SMS office. You may wish to do this via email so you have a record of what has been agreed.
  • If you pay your for your own travel expenses, you should then reclaim this using an expense claim form (excel claim form / PDF claim form) which you will need to have signed by your HoG / PI before handing into the SMS office along with original receipts.
  • If you would prefer to have your travel booked and paid for directly by the School, please obtain your HoG /PIs approval in writing (via email) first detailing the amount approved and the budget code, after which you can forward this to Paul along with full details of booking requirements. Paul can then assist with booking your travel/accommodation/conference fees.
  • Please do not submit one of the old “absence on college business” forms as these are no longer in use.
