    • Please review our Psychology Department policy for using generative AI programs (i.e., chatGPT). This policy reviews what you can- and cannot  use generative AI for in your course, and reviews the consequences for inappropriate use. Key takeaway points include:

      1. GenAI is not a valid scientific source of information: you must find original, validated, scientific information to support your coursework.

      2. You must cite GenAI when you use it, and include a copy of the full-text response when you use GenAI (this will not count towards wordcount of coursework).

      3. You should not copy large pieces of text from any source, including GenAI (even if you cite it). You should rephrase in your own words and include a citation (although note point 1: genAI is not a valid source of scientific information).

Please review the policy and ask on the Psychology Module Forum if you have any questions.

Please note: This policy is subject to change as QMUL guidance changes.

    a) Exam advice in each of your modules that is tailored to the module's essay exam

    b) Past exam papers to practice your writing

    c) A video explanation of the Essay Grading Criteria to apply in your essay writing throughout the year.

It is our hope that this support will help to alleviate uncertainty around exam expectations and help you to do your best work!

    • Psychology Essay-Style Marking Scheme

    • Please review the Psychology Essay Marking Scheme prior to completing the mock essay exam. This will help you to understand how your lecturers will evaluate your essays, and help you to structure your writing.

Please also watch the video below, where Dr. Gwen Brekelmans describes the Essay-style Marking Scheme in detail.

    • 1. Timed essay support session - Mon 30 Oct 2023

Below, you can find the slides and recording from the session preparing you for timed essay based exams with Chenée Psaros and Rosella D'Alesio.

    • 2. Mock Essay-Based Exam

You are invited to participate in a mock timed essay-based exam. The exam will open on October 30, and close on Nov 24. You will get peer and/or staff feedback on your mock exam submission in a follow-up workshop in Week 10.

    • We understand that writing a essay-based exam under a time limit is challenging. To help you prepare, we invite you to take part in this mock 2-hour timed essay-based exam. The purpose of this exam is:

      a) familiarize with timed-essay conditions.

This will help you understand what to expect- and how to structure your time in a 2-hour essay.

      b) familiarize with the essay mark scheme.

Please review the essay mark scheme and watch the accompanying video below before writing your exam. This will help you to understand what your lecturers are looking for when they evaluate your essay. With this knowledge, you can then structure your essay to target the areas identified in the marking scheme.

      TOPIC OF THE MOCK ESSAY

The topic of the mock essay is generic and is not tied to a specific module. You can answer the question based on the psychology knowledge that you have obtained thus far in your degree.

If you want to test module specific knowledge, please practice using formative questions on the module page or in the Psychology Exam Database.

      MOCK ESSAY-BASED EXAM INSTRUCTIONS:

Please find a quite place where you can write, uninterrupted, for two hours.

Once you open the exam, you have 2 hours to complete it. Please upload your answer within 2 hours of the start time.

  • Support for Multiple-Choice Question Exams

We understand that writing a multiple-choice question (MCQ) exam under a time limit can be challenging. We also know that practice and familiarity with exam testing conditions can help to alleviate exam stress. This is why we have created a mock multiple-choice exam that replicates the exam testing conditions of 23/24 for you to complete.

This mock exam is a 50 question MCQ exam. The topic of the exam is Year 1 Statistics and Research methods, so you will already be familiar with the content and not need to revise much beforehand.

Once opened, you will have 75 minutes to complete the exam. If you are registered with DDS, you will receive extra time as per your student support summary.

Feedback on how you performed on this exam will be provided after you submit your answers.

You may take this exam as many times as you like to familiarize yourself with timed testing conditions.

Note: The purpose of this exam is give you practice answering multiple-choice questions under timed exam conditions, not to test Y2 content knowledge. If you want practice answering question on specific Y2 module content, please complete the practice questions provided on your module pages or the practice questions provided in the Psychology Exam Database.

    • MOCK TIMED MCQ EXAM INSTRUCTIONS:

Please find a quite place where you can complete this exam uninterrupted.

  • Academic Integrity and AI

    • This session will cover Academic Integrity, Plagiarism, and Generative AI within Psychology at QMUL. The session will give you key guidance and insights on how to navigate appropriate use of various resources and references throughout your studies and assignments.
This session will be taught by the excellent academic skills advisors from the QMUL library, Chenée Psaros and Rosella D’Alesio.

Please review the policy and ask on the Psychology Module Forum if you have any questions.

Please note: this policy is subject to change, as this is a fast-moving field.

  • Advisors, year tutors, wellbeing

    • What is an Academic Advisor?

At the start of your degree, you will be assigned an advisor. This person will stay the same across the whole time on the degree, and you can see who your  advisor is in MySIS.

Your advisor can provide you with guidance and support during your studies. They are the first person to contact when you have any questions that you're not sure who to ask. They can help support you if you are having difficulties with your studies, or if you are having personal problems (e.g. health or family issues) that might impact your ability to study. They can also help you decide which third year electives to choose, and can write you a reference for jobs or postgraduate applications (if you ask them first!).

Your advisor will check in with you at regular points throughout the year. It's important to engage with these check-in moments! This way, your advisor will know whether you're doing okay or whether you need any help, and can support you as best as possible.

    • What is a Year tutor?

There are three Year tutors across the whole BSc Psychology; one for each year of studying. The year tutor is someone who will provide an extra layer of support for you. They will be in regular contact with the student representatives of your year to check if there are any issues or concerns that affect the whole year group. You can also go to your Year tutor if you have issues you would rather not discuss with your advisor, or if your advisor has not been able to help.
    • This page has a brief introduction to what an advisor is, along with a video.

    • This page from Advice and Counselling has collected all crucial resources and contacts for when you need help in a crisis.

    • This is the Queen Mary Student Union page on wellbeing, which has lots of resources you might find useful.

    • This is the homepage for the Advice and Counselling Services.

  • Student voice - your feedback

    • The student voice, aka your thoughts and feedback, is very important to us on the BSc Psychology! We want to make sure we are aware of what you think is going well or what could be improved on the programme. There are different ways in which you can give us your thoughts:

There are multiple 'Student voice' sessions throughout the year, where the Director of Teaching and Learning as well as the Year tutor of your year will have an informal meeting where you can let us know your thoughts on how things are going.

Throughout the year, you can also fill out the anonymous feedback form linked below.

    • Please fill out this brief, anonymous feedback form to share your student voice with your Year Tutors and Director of Psychology.

We would appreciate hearing your your thoughts on the things that are going well and the challenges that you are facing in your course.

      Best wishes,

Dr Gwen Brekelamsn (Year 1 Tutor), Dr. Giorgia Michelini (Year 2 Tutor), Dr. Jessica Agnew-Blais (Year 3 Tutor), and Dr Stephanie Echols (BSc Programme Director)
