  • We understand that writing a essay-based exam under a time limit is challenging. That is why we have series of events to help you prepare for your exams this year. This support includes:

    1. A Timed-Essay Writing Workshop (Week 4 in Year 2; Week 8 in Year 3)

    2. Information and advice on Exam submission

    2. Practice Timed-Essay Exams

    In addition, you will receive:

    a) Exam advice and practice exercises in each of your modules that are tailored to the module's essay exam

    b) Past exam papers to practice your writing

    c) A video explanation of the Essay Grading Criteria to apply in your essay writing throughout the year.

    d) FAQs below to answer frequently-asked questions about essay-based exams.

It is our hope that this support will help to alleviate uncertainty around exam expectations and help you to do your best work!

      • You are invited to participate in a practice essay-based exam!

Practice writing tests is one of the best ways to prepare for your final exams. This is not just because you are practicing a skill of timed writing, but because it helps consolidate your memory of the material!

        For example, see Roediger, H. L., & Karpicke, J. D. (2006). Test-Enhanced Learning: Taking Memory Tests Improves Long-Term Retention: Taking Memory Tests Improves Long-Term Retention. Psychological Science17(3), 249-255. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1467-9280.2006.01693.x.

This research shows that repeated testing improves memory and test performance over and above repeated studying, even when no feedback is provided on test results.

We strongly encourage you to take these tests under exam conditions. This includes:

        1. Taking the exam in a quite space (ideally where you'll take the real exam), putting away your phone and other distractions
        2. Practicing how and where you will save your exam
        3. Giving yourself a strict time limit of two hours, and practicing uploading your answer

Although you will not receive individual feedback on your answer, your module organisers will provide advice in-module for how to answer exam questions like these. We also recommend that you submit your answer to Studiosity for feedback on your writing.
