  • Welcome

TELT Teaching Spaces hub (Queen Mary Staff) on a screen in lecture theatre.

This resource is for all QMUL staff who use teaching spaces, offering clear guidance for most of the technology available across our rooms—from small seminar spaces to 400‑seat lecture theatres. With more than 300 rooms across our campuses, all equipped differently, this course provides general guidance to support you no matter where you teach.

Teaching rooms vary significantly in setup. Some spaces have a single monitor, others a projector. Some offer multiple handheld microphones, while others may have none. Visualisers may be present in certain rooms but not others. You’ll also find a mix of PC labs, standard teaching rooms, and small seminar spaces. Because of this variety, our guidance focuses on core principles that apply across all rooms.

Our role is to help you use the equipment—not repair it. When something goes wrong, knowing who to contact makes all the difference:

If you have feedback or suggestions about this site, please complete the feedback form (for QMUL Staff only).

We also run in‑person teaching space awareness sessions across different campuses.Visit the CPD site to see upcoming sessions or register your interest.

    • This book introduces the most common pieces of equipment you’ll find in a teaching space. Use the contents page to navigate through the different sections.

The specific model or brand of equipment in your room may look slightly different, and you may have more or fewer items than those shown here. This guide is intended to provide a general overview.

        • We also run an in‑person workshop, Large Group Interactive Teaching in Practice, focused on supporting colleagues who teach large groups and want to explore interactive, evidence‑based approaches. You may wish to attend if you would like to experiment with teaching methods in a large lecture theatre, try out the space and equipment, ask questions, and receive peer feedback in a supportive, low‑stakes environment.

The session is delivered by Valentina Aparicio De Soto and Giorgia Pigato from Queen Mary Academy (QMA), with contributions from John Seamons (TELT).

These sessions are for Queen Mary staff only and must be booked via the CPD site, which requires a Queen Mary account.

If no sessions are currently available, you can register your interest and share the opportunity with colleagues who may also find it useful.

        • We also run a EchoVideo (Q-Review) session focused specifically on lecture capture software, which is a major area of interest for many staff. You may wish to attend if you would like to learn more about how EchoVideo (Q-Review) works and how it can support your teaching.

These sessions are for Queen Mary staff only and must be booked through the CPD site, which requires a Queen Mary account.

If no sessions are currently available, you can register your interest in attending.

        • Please consider attending one of our upcoming in‑person Teaching Space Awareness sessions. These usually run in January or September across a range of teaching spaces on our campuses. The workshops give you the opportunity to explore the equipment and ask any questions you may have.

These sessions are for Queen Mary staff only and must be booked through the CPD site, which requires a Queen Mary account.

If no sessions are currently available, you can register your interest in attending.
