Welcome

This resource is for all QMUL staff who use teaching spaces, offering clear guidance for most of the technology available across our rooms—from small seminar spaces to 400‑seat lecture theatres. With more than 300 rooms across our campuses, all equipped differently, this course provides general guidance to support you no matter where you teach.
Teaching rooms vary significantly in setup. Some spaces have a single monitor, others a projector. Some offer multiple handheld microphones, while others may have none. Visualisers may be present in certain rooms but not others. You’ll also find a mix of PC labs, standard teaching rooms, and small seminar spaces. Because of this variety, our guidance focuses on core principles that apply across all rooms.
Our role is to help you use the equipment—not repair it. When something goes wrong, knowing who to contact makes all the difference:
-
Urgent help during teaching:
Use the phone in the room to call 6555 for immediate AV support or on a mobile 020 7882 6550. -
Non‑urgent hardware faults:
Please raise a ticket so the issue can be logged and resolved. -
Learning technology or pedagogy questions:
Raise a ticket, marking it FAO TELT, to start a conversation with our team.
If you have feedback or suggestions about this site, please complete the feedback form (for QMUL Staff only).
We also run in‑person teaching space awareness sessions across different campuses.Visit the CPD site to see upcoming sessions or register your interest.

This book introduces the most common pieces of equipment you’ll find in a teaching space. Use the contents page to navigate through the different sections.
The specific model or brand of equipment in your room may look slightly different, and you may have more or fewer items than those shown here. This guide is intended to provide a general overview.
