Topic outline

  • Opportunities & Training

    • There are many opportunities to get involved in outreach and public engagement as part of the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences programme, as well as several external initiatives that you can take advantage of. We also encourage you to come up with your own public engagement activities and projects, for which there is funding you can apply for.

To support all of the above, each research group has a Public Engagement Champion who you can approach to hear about any current opportunities, or you can talk to the School's Public Engagement and Outreach Officer for information and guidance. Names and links to contact details can be found below:

    • These are some of the recurring opportunities within SPCS that you could get involved with. Other opportunities exist and you are encouraged to develop your own activities or projects also.

    • The Centre for Public Engagement provides advice, support, and advocacy to anyone at Queen Mary who is looking to engage with people outside of academia. They do this through training, funding, recognition and reward for excellent engagement activity. Their aim is to develop a culture where high quality public engagement is embedded into how we work.

  • Outreach & Public Engagement Reporting

    • If you have been involved in any outreach or public engagement activities not arranged through the Public Engagement and Outreach Officer, please enter it into this form. This is so that our reporting to central QMUL, SEPnet and the Ogden Trust is as accurate as possible. Any queries please contact spcs-outreach@qmul.ac.uk
  • PhD Students

We encourage PhD students in particular to gain experience in public engagement and science communication activities. This constitutes part of your educational training and is a growing expectation of the role of a (publicly-funded) researcher and therefore counts towards the QMUL Skills Points system. Nonetheless, to recognise this work the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences is willing to offer up to 10 hours of demonstrator-rate pay towards either the delivery of existing public engagement activities or towards developing your own public engagement project, though these must be discussed and agreed upon with the Outreach and Widening Participation Officer beforehand.

    • Outreach and Public Engagement development / activity can count towards PhD training through the Skills Points system in Domain D (Engagement, influence and impact) for 1 point per hour, up to a maximum of 60 points total.
