Values and behaviours

In this final introductory section, we will explore the professional values and behaviours expected of academic professionals in higher education, especially within clinical education. You’ll consider how these shape your identity, relationships, practice and growth, and how they align with the broader aims of the Academic Professional Apprenticeship.

You'll reflect on the relevance of these values in your own teaching, research, leadership. But also the role they play in your interactions with learners and colleagues and how you engage in evidence-informed, inclusive and ethically responsible practice as a result.

Professional values and behaviours are not just personal traits - they are the bedrock of trust, accountability and credibility in academic and clinical settings. They guide decision-making, promote student success, support legal and ethical compliance and enhance both institutional reputation and your own. They also help to underpin career-long professional development in higher education.
