Discourse analysis is about analyzing social life by using a number of methods such as different levels of language, for example; communicating through interactions that are:

-       Non-verbal (such as body language)

-       And face-to-face interactions.

Discourse analysis provides a variety of ways to discover/understand meanings of words, things, ideas, theories etc (through culture, tradition and conversations).

The study of such an analysis requires a wide variety of ideas topics and theories. It also describes the language that is in use.

There are different approaches to discourse analytic studies and these approaches are influenced by a number of factors. For example;

-       Cultural factors/studies

-       Philosophy

-       Studies on gender

-       Language studies

-       Psychology, etc.

Discourse analysis is basically about going deeper than the “literal” meaning of the words, actions and language used. It requires the understanding of actions at the social level.

This study has enriched my understanding on how important language is between doctors (even nurses) and patients. It taught me that a lot of misunderstanding could happen due to the languages used. It also became clearer to me that it is very important to listen to patients (their thoughts, feelings) and not just give orders on what medications to take and for how long etc..

The study on: (Katchergin O. Cult Med Psychiatry. 2012 Oct 12):” Between Negative Stigma (Cultural Deprivation) and Positive Stigma (Learning Disability): The Historical Development of Two Special Education Track” used discourse analysis.

This paper provides a suggestion with a larger and deeper perspective on learning disabilities compared to what is accepted by the local literature of Israel. This paper describes how such disabilities are perceived in the Israeli culture society and the different classes within the Israeli society. This is presented through;

-       Historical studies[1]

-       Accreditation/authorization[2]

-       And comparisons of 2 special education discourses: the “cultural deprivation” discourse and the “learning disabilities” discourse. [3]
