Hi, I am sorry this is so late- I was concerned about the use of open vs. closed questions, and wanted to know if I could use a mixture of the two- but here are my ideas!

Study question: since the increase in pub closure, have there been significant changes in drinking culture that have led to an overall increase in private drinking?

Target groups: those born in 1940’s (“baby boomers”) and 1990’s (“iPhone generation”)

Areas of study:

  • Is there a relationship between the price of alcohol and personal private consumption?
  • In pubs customers can buy rounds and drinks may be more expensive; in supermarkets etc consumers may be able to buy more for less to drink alone.
  • What is the link between advertising and consumption?
  • If you drink in the pub socially, are you less likely to drink more than at home?
  • Consumers cannot bring children into pubs- with pub closure, are more people drinking at home/in front of children, and if so what effect is that having?
  • In pubs you may be encouraged to drink less or at least not drink too much- (landlords/friends); at home there may be nobody to support you to drink less
  • What percentage income is being spent on alcohol?
  • What types of drinks are people buying? e.g. Lager/wine/alcopops

Questions

1. How old are you?

2. Do you buy most of your alcohol from:

  • Pubs
  • Off licences
  • Supermarkets
  • Wine bars
  • Nightclubs

Are there any incentives for you to buy from here? E.g. 2 for 1/multipacks etc.

3.  How much do you spend on alcohol a week?

  • £20
  • £40
  • £60
  • £80
  • £100+

-Are you comfortable with the amount you spend on alcohol?

4. What is your annual salary?

  • I am unemployed
  • Less than £10,000
  • £10,000-£15,000
  • £16,000-£20,000
  • £21,000-£25,000
  • £26,000-£30,000
  • £31,000-£35,000
  • £36,000-£40,000
  • £40,000+

-Do you have any concerns about your spending on alcohol?

5. Do you have children?

-How do you feel about drinking in front of your children?

-Do you have any concerns about how this makes them feel?

6. How do you usually drink?

  • Alone:
    • At home
    • In public places eg pub/bar/club
    • With friends:
      • At home
      • In public places eg pub/bar/club

-How does drinking alone compare with drinking in the company of others?

-If you drink at home do you ever drink more than you would in a public place? If so, why do you think this is?

7. Which type of drink do you usually purchase?

Drink

How often?

Beer

Wine

Spirits

8. How often do you consume alcohol?

Very topical given the findings in today's newspapers!  This is an excellent example of a survey with one or two qualitative questions added. You can indeed put 'free text' questions in a survey but you won't get the rich responses that you would get in semi-structured interviews which are typically tape recorded and can give you pages and pages of qualitative data.
