Exploring the "values and behaviour" standards

As we have seen, your role as an educator extends well beyond the technical or clinical aspects of teaching. It involves modelling professional integrity, building inclusive and ethical learning environments, and contributing positively to both your institution and the wider academic community.

As an apprentice, you are not only expected to support your students in developing professional values, but also to embody and evolve your own. Your behaviours, from how you engage with colleagues and learners to how you respond to challenges, reflect your identity as an academic professional.

Much like we have done in previous sections, here, we will explore the values and behaviours standards that underpin the Academic Professional Apprenticeship. They span key areas such as ethical decision-making, commitment to continuous professional development, leadership, inclusion, and engagement with the wider higher education landscape.

Core values and behaviours

  1. ethical, sustainable and inclusive practices and equality of opportunity to a professional standard
  2. the need to continuously develop their knowledge and insight in relation to career management, responsiveness to opportunities, networking, reputation and esteem
  3. the need to commit to CPD in relation to relevant contemporary issues such as: student employability and graduate employment destinations, ethics and sustainability, academic integrity, legal compliance and intellectual property, respect and confidentiality, and health and safety
  4. the need to consider evidence-informed approaches and the outcomes from research, scholarship and CPD to inform their own professional practice
  5. the wider context (policy, economic, societal, technological, legal, cultural and environmental) in which higher education operates, recognising the implications for professional practice
  6. the need to seek opportunities to network, to practise public engagement and to communicate effectively
  7. the need to be enthusiastic, self-confident, and self-reflective to operate effectively in the role
  8. the requirement to persevere, have integrity, be prepared to take responsibility, to lead, mentor and supervise.

Activity: Reviewing the "values and behaviour" standards - Padlet

Head over to the Padlet page where you will find the 9 knowledge standards listed.

We would like you to review the list and identify three - TWO that you feel you are reasonably familiar with and ONE ‘cloudy’ standard that you feel less sure about.

Once you have identified these, we would like you to add posts under the relevant heading with the following:

  • For the TWO 'familiar' standards, add examples of own teaching or learning in relation to each of them
  • For the ONE 'cloudy' standard, add 1-2 questions you may have about it that might help make it more clear
