Exploring the "Knowledge" standards
Exploring the "Knowledge" standards
As we have seen, your role as an educator goes far beyond delivering content. It encompasses understanding how students learn, designing inclusive and effective learning environments, engaging with research and contributing to the broader academic and professional landscape.
As an apprentice, you are expected to not only enhance your students knowledge as part of your practice, but also develop your own knowledge as an educator.
In this section we will look more closely at the Core Knowledge standards that underpin the Academic Professional Apprenticeship. These standards define the essential knowledge base you are expected to develop and apply in your role. They cover a wide spectrum - from teaching and assessment methods to regulatory frameworks, technological tools and reflective practice.
Core Knowledge
- a range of teaching, assessment and feedback methods used in higher education to support learning and achievement
- how students learn and how to adapt delivery methods to support a range of students’ needs
- how research is conducted, within their own and related disciplines and in inter-disciplinary or trans-disciplinary contexts
- regulatory, administrative, financial, planning procedures, risk management, quality assurance and quality enhancement, and how they are related to their role in higher education
- technological processes associated with effectiveness in their role within the HE sector
- methods for evaluating the effectiveness of academic activities, such as teaching and the quality and impact of research
- how to engage with relevant professional bodies and other external organisations to support their work
- the principles of reflective practice and the methods for applying reflective practice to their own professional development
- innovative approaches to undertaking their work to create interest, understanding and enthusiasm among their students, funders or stakeholders
Activity: Reviewing the "Knowledge" standards - Padlet
Head over to the Padlet page where you will find the 9 knowledge standards listed.
We would like you to review the list and identify three - TWO that you feel you are reasonably familiar with and ONE ‘cloudy’ standard that you feel less sure about.
Once you have identified these, we would like you to add posts under the relevant heading with the following:
- For the TWO 'familiar' standards, add examples of own teaching or learning in relation to each of them
- For the ONE 'cloudy' standard, add 1-2 questions you may have about it that might help make it more clear
