Thinking about your teaching experience

As a clinical educator, your teaching may take many forms - from formal lectures and small group tutorials to one-to-one supervision, bedside teaching, or even quick, on-the-run conversations in busy wards. You may be teaching practical skills, shaping professional behaviours, or guiding critical thinking, sometimes all in a single day.

Teaching in clinical settings is often responsive, fast-paced, and deeply embedded in practice. It can feel very different from traditional classroom teaching, but it’s just as impactful, and just as complex.

“Teaching is not just about transmitting knowledge. It's about inspiring change.”
- William Arthur Ward

This apprenticeship will support you to deepen and develop your teaching practice, not just in how you teach, but in understanding the why behind it. You’ll explore different approaches, reflect on your current methods, and discover new ways to support and challenge learners more effectively in your setting.

Activity: Reflecting on your teaching (Mentimeter)

To begin this journey, we’d like you to think about your own teaching so far.

In the Mentimeter activity, you’ll be invited to reflect on:

  • What kinds of teaching you’ve done
  • You perspectives on teaching
  • What you think it means to be a teacher in a clinical or academic setting

There are no right or wrong answers - just your honest reflections to get the conversation started.
