Dear GP Tutor,

Many thanks to you and your practice team for taking our students during the academic year 2021-22. We really value your commitment during what continues to be challenging and uncertain times. Our priority is to help you to provide the invaluable educational and clinical contact students need - while continuing to adapt to the demands of primary care.

All our primary care modules and associated GP placements have been updated for 2021-22 building on changes over the last year. To prepare and support in your teaching and supervising role, we are providing an annual programme of ONLINE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS (SEE TABLES BELOW FOR DATES). Education co-ordinators are also welcome to attend all sessions.

1.       ESSENTIAL TRAINING – live online – all tutors

To create safe ‘SPEAKING UP’ culture and help students develop valuable skills the medical school would like all clinical supervisors to complete the short  ‘LISTENING UP’ online module during Semester 1.

This module can be accessed via the ‘e-Learning for Healthcare’ website (you will need to set up an account) here:  https://portal.e-lfh.org.uk/Login?returnURL=%2FDashboard

‘Connecting Practice: managing challenging situations in GP placement supervision’

What are the Connecting Practice sessions?

Being GP tutor brings many rewards but also challenges – especially in this time of social and service upheaval. Connecting Practice is a supportive monthly forum to help you in the intricate tasks of supervision and teaching. Topics cover emotionally demanding situations such as:  students’ responses to patient distress or anger; GPs sharing dilemmas, mistakes/near misses; making online placements ‘human’;  giving feedback to students who are judgemental with  patients or on poor performance; boundary issues, punctuality and managing unreasonable expectations; and supporting and signposting students with personal difficulties; all to develop student insight, reflexivity and self-awareness . GP tutors share cases in discussion with two facilitators with experience of group supervision  and medical school support services . Sessions involve listening, validating, and problem solving through sharing.
