IMPORTANT Dates for Diary - GP Tutors Training & Development : Restarting student placements
Dear GP Tutor,
Many thanks to you and your practice team for taking our students during the academic year 2021-22. We really value your commitment during what continues to be challenging and uncertain times. Our priority is to help you to provide the invaluable educational and clinical contact students need - while continuing to adapt to the demands of primary care.
All our primary care modules and associated GP placements have been updated for 2021-22 building on changes over the last year. To prepare and support in your teaching and supervising role, we are providing an annual programme of ONLINE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS (SEE TABLES BELOW FOR DATES). Education co-ordinators are also welcome to attend all sessions.
1. ESSENTIAL TRAINING – live online – all tutors
· MODULE INDUCTION TRAINING: short workshops (1-2 hours) - one per module covering educational & technical aspects of creating a safe but challenging learning environment – please attend ALL relevant inductions
· CONNECTING PRACTICE: MANAGING CHALLENGING SITUATIONS IN GP PLACEMENT SUPERVISION – monthly sessions (third Wednesday of month, 1.5 hours). An opportunity for GP tutors to develop skills and continuously improve their teaching practice through facilitated case-based discussion – including focusing on challenging situations in student supervision, developing and sharing best practice, and focusing on making sense of what might be going on for both the tutor and the students - please attend at least ONE session between Sept 2021 & Jan 2022
2. SUPPORT SESSIONS: live online – sharing best practice for virtual teaching/consultations
· REST (Remote Engagement for Students and Tutors) – sharing best practice - monthly sessions (drop-in, first Wednesday of the month)
· BESPOKE technical support and troubleshooting – personalised help to connect you, students and patients online – on request (contact Chloe Millan: c.millan@qmul.ac.uk)
3. ESSENTIAL ONLINE asynchronous e-Learning for Healthcare – all tutors
We all find it difficult to speak up when we experience something that concerns us. This is especially true for learners. To create safe ‘SPEAKING UP’ culture and help students develop valuable skills the medical school would like all clinical supervisors to complete the short ‘LISTENING UP’ online module during Semester 1.
This module can be accessed via the ‘e-Learning for Healthcare’ website (you will need to set up an account) here: https://portal.e-lfh.org.uk/Login?returnURL=%2FDashboard
4. TRAINING FOR NEW GP TUTORS – Semester 1 dates to follow
· NESTT (North East London Student Tutor Training): MINI intro & full day NESTTS
· GREAT (GP & Registrar, Educator Academic Training)
Please contact Chloe Millan c.millan@qmul.ac.uk to register your interest
5. CBME SPRING & SUMMER EDUCATION DAYS 2022 – dates to follow
We will send you details (with joining links) for all relevant MODULE INDUCTION TRAINING sessions prior to each session. Please put the dates below in your calendars now. Supporting you to inspire our tomorrow’s doctors is more important than ever, so let us know if you have any queries or need any other support.
With very best wishes,
Anita Berlin

Opportunity and space to focus on challenging situations in student supervision; a forum for support and skills development through facilitated case-based discussion |
‘Connecting Practice: managing challenging situations in GP placement supervision’ What are the Connecting Practice sessions? Being GP tutor brings many rewards but also challenges – especially in this time of social and service upheaval. Connecting Practice is a supportive monthly forum to help you in the intricate tasks of supervision and teaching. Topics cover emotionally demanding situations such as: students’ responses to patient distress or anger; GPs sharing dilemmas, mistakes/near misses; making online placements ‘human’; giving feedback to students who are judgemental with patients or on poor performance; boundary issues, punctuality and managing unreasonable expectations; and supporting and signposting students with personal difficulties; all to develop student insight, reflexivity and self-awareness . GP tutors share cases in discussion with two facilitators with experience of group supervision and medical school support services . Sessions involve listening, validating, and problem solving through sharing. |
