Consultation 2. Video Demo. Tanya Anderson. [More effective technique] 16 minutes
In this brief video the doctor uses more effective techniques based on best practice in communication skills, and a motivational interviewing approach. You will see that he;
- Tries to listen carefully and empathetically
- He resists the "righting reflex" [the urge to correct, persuade or coerce]
- He does not dismiss the patient's concerns, rather he listens with respect
- He asks what might help her in her decision-making; provides relevant information; then checks how that has helped (ASK-OFFER-ASK)
- He reflects back her concerns to check he has understood
- He articulates both the positive reasons she has for accepting the vaccine; and the concerns she has which are stopping her at the moment. "On the one hand you can see the benefits...and on the other these worries are holding you back."
- He normalises this ambivalence. It's normal to be hesitant or concerned if you have heard worrying things about a new vaccine.
- He summarises at the end and leaves door open for further contact and discussion
Afterwards, the actor playing Tanya offers her thoughts on how it went facilitated by Harvey Wells, Senior Lecturer in Communication Skills
NB: Vaccines - of any type - can temporarily make your blood sugars rise, but should not destabilise diabetic blood sugar control in the long-term, which was one of the patient's concerns. As Diabetes UK says:
