Dear students,

As a reminder, please read below for supervision procedures for iBSc and iMSc/MSc Global Public Health & Policy students (Public Mental Health students, your supervisors will be allocated in Term 2 by Simpson). Please do not email me with your supervisor requests, but put their names in the topic survey that will open this week for MSc students. Please hang tight until you have been emailed the link for the survey.

  • Supervisor allocation: We try to allocate students a supervisor with expertise in the area of your dissertation topic or the method you are using. We cannot always guarantee a perfect match as there is a limit to how many students each member of staff can supervise. All supervisors are equipped to supervise projects outside their area of expertise. When you complete your dissertation topic survey (see below) you can indicate a member of staff that you would like to supervise your dissertation but note that we do not guarantee that you will be allocated that supervisor.
  • Allocation timeline (iBSc): iBSc students will have a supervisor allocated by the second week of December, after the completion of their dissertation topic survey (see below). They should arrange to meet their supervisor before the December break. Students undertaking partnership projects have already been allocated a supervisor as their projects require this.
  • Allocation timeline (iMSc/MSc): iMSc/MSc students will have a supervisor allocated in early January, after they complete their topic surveys (see below). As mentioned above, you may informally reach out to members of staff to discuss ideas, but please do not assume that they will be your supervisors. Students undertaking partnership projects have already been allocated a supervisor as their projects require this.
  • Dissertation topic survey: These should be completed by Monday the 2nd of December (iBSc students) and Monday the 16th of December (iMSc/MSc students). The survey will ask you to briefly explain your project and the methods you plan to use, as well as a potential supervisor you would like to work with. The surveys will be released at least two weeks in advance of the above dates.
  • List of supervisors and their areas of interest: Attached to this email and uploaded to the Dissertation QMPlus pages is a list of possible supervisors and their areas of research interest. You can take a look at this list to determine who might be good to supervise your dissertation and/or to reach out to members of staff for informal advice on your dissertation topic ideas.
  • Meeting with supervisors: Once you have been allocated a supervisor, it is your responsibility to reach out to them as soon as possible to arrange a first meeting.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to email me.

Best wishes,

Andreas
