Dear Students,

We hope you are having a great day so far!

This is a final reminder that the submission for the Preiskel & Co. Essay Competition is closing this weekend - Sunday, 2nd of June.

All entries must be sent to pglaw-internship@qmul.ac.uk before 1.55 pm, Sunday 2 June 2024.

Each year, the Preiskel & Co Essay Competition seeks to inspire LLM students, challenging them to delve into researched and comprehensive analyses of contemporary topics and their real-world applications. This is a brilliant chance for students to showcase their knowledge and secure recognition of their subject-matter handling by a prestigious law firm.

Topic: Any topic in the field of Technology Media and Communications, Intellectual Property Law or Data Protection Law.

Word count: 4,000 words (including footnotes)
Submission deadline: 11.55 pm, Sunday 2 June 2024.
Winner announcements: Monday 5 August 2024.

How to enter: Submissions should be sent to pglaw-internship@qmul.ac.uk with the email subject: “Student ID + Preiskel Essay Competition”

First prize: The student awarded the first prize will receive £800.

Additionally, they will be offered an internship placement at Preiskel & Co, a leading telecom, media and tech boutique law firm based in the City of London. They will become an integral part of an international team of technology, intellectual property, and telecommunications lawyers.

The internship duration is two to three weeks, from mid to late September. Flexible working arrangements are offered, so you can choose whether allowing the internship to be based in the Preiskel & Co. London office remotely, as an externship, or via a hybrid set-up.

Note: A number of previous winners have gone on to secure permanent positions within the firm, serving as Associates – so your essay could be an important and exciting step in your career development.

Runners-up: A prize of £100 each will be awarded to two runners-up for their outstanding contributions.

The students who win first and second place will be formally recognised, with their achievement documented on their Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR)

Aim of the essay competition: Students are encouraged to explore the practical application of the law in the context of technology, scenarios relevant to technology start-ups, or the challenges faced by technology companies.

Evaluation criteria include the strength of the analysis, resource utilisation encompassing primary and secondary materials, essay structure, research outcomes, and practical applications. We expect students to conduct extensive research and analysis of pertinent IT aspects and applications, with a preference for comparative law jurisprudence analysis.

The essay should aspire to the quality of publishable work, with thorough referencing and footnoting, and should not exceed a maximum word count of 4,000 words. This competition not only promotes academic excellence but also complements students in their research and writing for their final coursework, especially if the essay topic aligns with their LLM dissertation. You can edit and repurpose any of your own essays or parts of your LLM dissertation.

Disclaimer: Prizes will only be awarded to essays that meet the high standards expected of a Merit-level quality. In rare instances where none of the submitted essays reach the required level, we reserve the right not to confer the prize. We will not accept any late submission.

We encourage you to participate and showcase your academic excellence!

With best wishes,

Postgraduate Law Internship Team.
