    Many applicants do not get through the initial written application stage, even though they have a good academic background and relevant experience. The reason for their rejection is they have not tailored their CV and cover letter to show how they would add value to that employer. To help you gain a competitive advantage, we have developed an online tutorial to take you step by step through the process of writing your CV and cover letter. The course includes some examples of these documents.

  • POSTGRADUATE LAW MENTORING PROGRAMME

    Postgraduate (PG) Law Mentoring Programme 2024/25

    The programme opens annually for current full-time postgraduate law students (Full-time and 2nd Year Part-time students only) wishing to progress their careers by building professional networks across the legal sector.

    This extra-curricular programme is suitable for students who seek specialised advice to support their personal and professional development within a chosen field of law.

    Mentoring is taking place over 6 months.

    Contact happens face-to-face or via online meetings, with a minimum meaningful interaction of one hour a month (plus preparation time). Meeting methods can be flexibly arranged between the mentee and mentor.


    -        Following applications, student selection outcomes will be announced late December 2024 - early January 2025
    -        Pre-mentoring training (compulsory): February 2025 (TBC)
    -        Programme start: February 2025 (TBC)
    -        Programme finish:  August 2025  (TBC)
     
    PG Law Mentoring Programme overview:

    • Mentors will be matched with students on a one-to-one basis, according to students’ specialism, experience, and goals for their career in Law.
    • Selected students will be notified with their mentor details before the programme starts.
    • Selected students will not undergo an interview but will attend introductory training before the start of the programme.

    Process

    • Law Mentoring Launch event opens the programme, time, and venue TBC.
    • Mentoring takes place over 6 months, once a month for one hour.
    • Contact happens face-to-face, via e-mail, phone and online.

Work experience can fit in well with international student visa requirements, and employers can see your skills and potential, and where available consider you for more permanent positions.

    An internship is a period of work experience offered by an employer to give students and graduates exposure to the working environment, often relating to their field of study. Internships can be as short as a week or as long as 12 months. They can be paid or voluntary; however, before you start an internship it’s important to know your rights with regards to getting paid.

    Improving your English is often a prerequisite before applying for international students. English language and Study Skills modules are your passport to making your next career move after Queen Mary.

    QMUL offers a wide range of in-sessional modules which can help you to maximise your performance at university and beyond.  
    A Future Learn online course on business English can also help you improve through self-study.

    CONVENTION DE STAGE FOR QMUL PG LAW STUDENTS

    If you enrolled in a QMUL London-based postgraduate law course and secured an internship in France, Belgium, Luxembourg or Spain, your employer may require you and QMUL to complete a 'Convention de Stage' or ‘Internship Agreement’ document. 

    Please ask your employer whether they will accept the QMUL CCLS standard internship agreement. If your employer is happy to sign off our Convention de Stage document AND you will start your internship before graduation, we can help. This is especially important for internships undertaken in France. 

    Please complete the following forms which you can download as French version and English version (documents are attached below).
    Please also download and read carefully the Information & Guidelines document which tells you how to get your form completed.

      Our three experienced industry speakers cover a breadth of opportunities in legal technology and operations, with practical advice on where best to invest time to future-proof your skills and knowledge. Drawing on their own experience of different career paths, Beejal Patel (Legal Systems Manager, Diageo plc), Jenny Sacaj (Sales Associate, Flex Legal) and Lisa McClory (Knowledge Lawyer, Fractal Knowledge) provide an insider's view into the future of legal careers, inspiration for next steps and ways to diversify your skills.

  • 26/11/21 WORKSHOP: Demonstrating your Value

  • BPP BRIDGE PROGRAMME

    There is a set of new careers resources as part of a collaboration with BPP University Law School.  

    The resource is called “The Bridge Programme”, and is a free, career development programme you can complete in your own time over the coming winter/spring, housed on BPP’s own learning platform.  

    The programme will give you useful information and development activities for all of you who wish to qualify as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales, helping you to make the career-related decisions you have ahead of you, as well as developing some of the critical skills you will need to demonstrate in the recruitment process. 

    What does the Bridge Programme cover?

    • a range of modules for you to undertake alongside your postgraduate studies - bridging the gap between your studies and the next stage of your legal training;
    • a self-study, flexible online programme which contains a variety of interactive exercises and some ‘live’ online events to attend during the academic year. You can come and go to the module materials throughout your academic year. 

    The Bridge is two programmes in one: Bridge to the SQE (for prospective solicitors) and Bridge to the Bar (for aspiring barristers) - you simply choose which one to enrol on.

     What are the benefits of completing the Bridge Programme?

    As well as being free, students who complete at least half of the Bridge Programme, will have the chance of being awarded a scholarship in 2022, which works as a fee reduction against the cost of BPP’s GDL, LPC, SQE, BTC programmes.  Because Queen Mary has signed up to the Bridge with BPP, one £5,000 scholarship is guaranteed and up to three more (worth £2,000 each) may be awarded – more details about the scholarships will be published in spring 2022 as the programme progresses.  All students who complete the Bridge will also be awarded a Certificate of Completion – a great addition to your CV.

  • BPP BRIDGE PROGRAMME

    There is a set of careers resources available to all second, penultimate and final year students, as part of a collaboration with BPP University Law School.  

    The resource is called “The Bridge Programme”, and is a free, career development programme you can complete in your own time, housed on BPP’s own learning platform.  

    The programme will give you useful information and development activities for all of you who wish to qualify as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales, helping you to make the career-related decisions you have ahead of you, as well as developing some of the critical skills you will need to demonstrate in the recruitment process. 

    What does the Bridge Programme cover?

    • a range of modules for you to undertake alongside your undergraduate studies - bridging the gap between your degree and the next stage of your legal training;
    • a self-study, flexible online programme which contains a variety of interactive exercises and some ‘live’ online events to attend during the academic year.
    You can access the resources in a way that suits your schedule throughout the academic year. 

    The Bridge is two programmes in one: Bridge to the SQE (for prospective solicitors) and Bridge to the Bar (for aspiring barristers) - you simply choose which one to enrol on.

     What are the benefits of completing the Bridge Programme?

    As well as being free, students who complete at least half of the Bridge Programme, will have the chance of being awarded a scholarship in 2024, which works as a fee reduction against the cost of BPP’s Legal Practice Course (LPC), Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), Bar Training Course (BTC) programmes.  Because Queen Mary has signed up to the Bridge with BPP, one £5,000 scholarship is guaranteed and up to three more (worth £2,000 each) may be awarded – more details about the scholarships will be shared at a later date.  All students who complete the Bridge will also be awarded a Certificate of Completion – a great addition to your CV.
