Friday 20th January 2-3.15pm, online: Young V&A Recruitment and Volunteering session

This is invaluable if you’re interested in working in heritage; come and find out more about the Young V&A and learn more about the roles on offer! This is a recruitment session with the employer, arrive on time to make an impression.

 

Breakthrough! The Women’s Cafe is a space to discuss issues important to women of colour and support self-identifying women and non-binary people in their career development. The next event is on Monday 30th January, 5.00-6.30pm in the St Benet's Chaplaincy yurt, with New Beacon Books and Education Through Culture. Join us for our first session of the new year to meet the amazing women who volunteer at this well-known and much-loved Black-owned bookstore! As always, you will receive a warm welcome alongside complimentary delicious hot and cold foods and snacks, and we will be distributing FREE BOOKS from the store at the session!

 

In February we are running a series of online workshops exclusively for SED students, covering career choice, working for yourself, and presenting yourself to others. The first session is coming up on Wednesday 1st February at 2pm and is focusing on finding the right career for you – sign up here!

Wilton’s Music Hall role: Freelance Technician

 

Responsible to: Head of Technical and Facilities

Salary: £15 per hour

Wilton's Music Hall presents extraordinary theatre and music in the oldest Grand Music Hall in the world. Wilton's welcomes world-class artistic talent to the East End all year-round. We carefully produce and program productions for our unique building.

Welcoming world-class artistic talent to the East End, in 2019 we were home to 414 performances and 84 productions, carefully selected for our magical building and seen by 64,861 people. Named the 5th most iconic building in London by Time Out, the unique spirit of Wilton's has captured the imagination of artists and the public alike for over 160 years.

                     

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working on get-ins and get-outs.
  • Operating shows – lighting, sound and/or AV.
  • Acting as a Duty Technician for the venue, working primarily evenings and weekends.
  • Providing technical support for commercial events and hires; weddings, film shoots, etc.
  • Working in compliance with statutory and company health and safety regulations, procedures and inspections under the guidance of the Head of Technical and Facilities.

 

GENERAL

  • To be a skilled theatre technician with a good knowledge of theatre lighting, rigging, sound and professional theatre production.
  • To act as a Duty Technician as required and ensure safe evacuation of the building and secure unlock and lock up. 
  • To hold a current First Aid at Work certificate and to be able to provide first aid to staff and customers as required (training can be provided).
  • To undertake other duties as might reasonably be required by the Executive Director.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential – technical

  • Previous technical experience of working in a producing or receiving theatre, or recognized training in technical theatre.
  • Proven experience or training as a general technician and thorough knowledge of all technical equipment used in a mid-scale venue. 
  • Awareness of Health and Safety issues.
  • Able to work scheduled evenings and weekends, including the anti-social hours frequently required in the position.

 

Essential – behavioural qualities

  • A positive ‘can-do’ attitude to work and a desire to work, and a desire to continuously improve working practices.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm whilst working under pressure.

 

Desirable

  • Knowledge and/or training in Health and Safety including First Aid, manual handling, working at height (rope access, mobile elevated work platforms etc).
  • Knowledge of ETC Ion consoles or Digital sound desks or both.
  • Knowledge of QLab.
  • Basic woodworking skills.
