Wednesday 17th March 2021, 2:00pm to 3:00pm

Title: Moving from evidence to policy and practice change in the mental health sector

Discussants: Martin Knapp, LSE

Summary: Mental health problems have many potential causes, and a wide range of potential consequences, some of them over the life-course. Evidence on ‘what works’ (in preventing or responding to these health issues) and at what cost obviously can help to inform policy discussion and to shape treatment and care developments. However, moving from evidence to action is challenging, in part because of the multiplicity of causes and consequences, but also because of the contested nature of some experiences and views, as well widespread stigma and discrimination. Focusing primarily on economic evidence, I will describe and illustrate those challenges, and discuss some of the necessary responses. I will draw on a number of recent mental health studies in the UK and elsewhere.
