Institute of Population Health Sciences (IPHS) Online Seminar

Title: Defining Queen Mary’s commitment to east London
Discussants: Emily Burns, Director of QMUL Centre for Public Engagement
Summary: Queen Mary is a partner member of the Civic University Network, a new network developed to support universities to better recognise their role and responsibilities within their local society and economy. As part of this, Queen Mary is now developing a Civic University Agreement: a series of commitments by the University to the local area in collaboration with other anchor institutions and partners. This represents an opportunity to bring together and recognise the already excellent work happening across Queen Mary, build evidence of local needs, and to think more ambitiously about how we operate within our local context. This work spans academia and professional services, with potential themes likely to include engagement, our spaces, governance, procurement and employment, and research.
The Centre for Public Engagement (CPE) is leading the coordination of this project, starting with a programme of community listening until early 2021. Emily joined Queen Mary in March as Director of the CPE, and would like to use this opportunity to introduce herself and the CPE, share more about the civic university agreement plans, gain feedback, and discuss potential alignment with the IPHS’s work.
