There are lots of careers events/workshops coming up in January that MA Historians may want to dip into...

ALL EVENTS can be booked by clicking HERE... and search for the event you want... they are in date order.  Places are limited, so if something appeals, do book straight away.  There are events in January exploring careers in Law, Social Media/Marketing, Teaching, Social Work, Politics & the Civil Service.  Also look out below for the 'Save the Dates' notice for our alumni evening events in February & March exploring careers in Media, Charities, Publishing & Digital.

Wednesday 17th January - Life as a London Barrister, 1-2pm, Arts Two

Are you interested in being a barrister?  This session is not so much about HOW to become one, but actually what is the REALITY OF LIFE as a barrister... what are the early years like, how will you actually spend your working day/split between time in and out of court, etc, how specialised is modern practice, what qualities do you need to succeed - and, of course, earnings. 

Andrew Simmonds has practiced at the London Bar for over 35 years. Over his career he has worked in many of the fields now dealt with in the Business and Property Courts, including trusts, inheritance, tax, insolvency and landlord and tenant. His principal specialisms have been professional negligence claims and pensions/employee benefits. Andrew has presented cases in courts at every level from the House of Lords/Supreme Court down. He was appointed a QC in 1999 and a Deputy High Court Judge in 2006. Andrew is now studying part-time for an MA in English Literature at QMUL.

This relaxed lunchtime session is open to all students and is run in partnership with QM Bar Society.

Wednesday 17th January- Assessment Centre Workshop to Build Your Knowledge & Skills, 2.15 - 4.45, Bancroft 3.26

Heard of 'assessment centres' and not sure what they are?
Thinking of applying to Graduate Schemes/Internships in the future?
Had some experience but want to improve your assessment centre skills?

Whether you have never been to an assessment centre or whether you have been to several but without success... this practical workshop is open to all. 

As a Historian, whatever field you want to work in, whether teaching, any area of business, finance, law, NGO's, Civil Service, marketing/advertising, research & development etc., you will almost certainly have to take part in an assessment centre, at some point in the next few years.  Come to this assessment centre workshop to learn what employers are looking for and to understand what YOU need to do to succeed at assessment centres.

This session will be delivered by QM career consultants representing the Schools of History, Geography, Economics & Finance and English & Drama.  Each participant will have the opportunity to both participate in assessment centre activities and to act as an observer to help understand what assessors are looking for, and will receive feedback on their participation.

23rd January - Frontline, DROP-IN 11-4.00pm, Mile End library foyer

Come and meet Frontline in the Library Foyer!    Frontline is a charity with a mission to transform the lives of vulnerable children by recruiting and developing outstanding individuals to be leaders in social work and broader society. 

Frontline are looking forward to talking to students about their graduate programme, which is an opportunity for outstanding individuals to join one of Britain’s most challenging, and yet most rewarding, professions.  This two-year Leadership Programme gives you the chance to transform the lives of vulnerable children by working as a children and family’s social worker in regions across the UK.

Frontline will be in the Mile End library foyer from 11-4pm, so make a note in your diary and drop in to see them - all students welcome.

 29th January - Writing for Social Media - skills workshop run by GOOGLE, 6.00 - 7.30pm

Whether you're looking to start your own business, or aspire to be a social media/digital marketer, hear from expert Googlers on how to develop these skills. In this compact course you will develop your writing skills and produce slicker headlines and ad copy. You'll also develop a tone of voice that means when you talk on social media, your customers will want to listen.


30th January - How to Get into Teaching - 6.00-8.00pm, People's Palace

Join the Department for Education (DfE) for an introduction to the teaching profession, an overview of what to expect in the role, and a chance for you to ask questions about your teacher training options. The DfE presentation will be followed by a forum of teacher training providers, giving you more opportunities to find your best route into teaching.  ARK Teacher Training and TeachFirst also confirmed to attend.


 30th January - A Masterclass from the co-founder of YouGov - 5.00 - 7.00pm, Arts One Lecture Theatre

Joe Twyman will be speaking about his career at YouGov, what the YouGov political team looks for from graduates; how to be so good employers can't ignore you; the future of work and how the very nature of work is changing; and the opportunities this might open to graduates to fast track their career.

Joe Twyman is Head of Political and Social Research for Europe, Middle East and Africa at YouGov and was a founding director of the company back in 2000. His first responsibility was to build the company’s online research operations, having previously developed internet research for Research Services Limited (now Ipsos-MORI).

31st January - The Civil Service... and Diversity - 6.00-7.30pm, People's Palace

Have you always dreamt of a career in Whitehall, but worried you won't be able to make an impact in a world of boring middle aged bureaucrats?   Or are you not sure what it is that a civil servant actually does?  Come along to this event which should be fascinating as the Civil Service are sending an incredibly high powered panel to talk to QM students.

The Civil Service Fast Stream invites you to a panel discussion about the importance of diversity in Whitehall with current civil servants from a range of backgrounds and departments. Their passion for public service has led them to rich careers in a dynamic, innovative and inclusive Civil Service. Panellists will share their thoughts on why the UK needs more diversity in Whitehall, why there is no such thing as a typical civil servant and talk about their experiences of working in government as members of minority groups. Panellists will also be sharing their career advice for students thinking of pursuing a career in the Civil Service and there will be current Fast Streamers available before and after the event to talk about graduate opportunities in the Civil Service.
