Introduction and Common Dermatological Problems - Common Skin Infections

Objectives

At the end of this module course participants should be able to:

  • List the bacteria commonly involved in skin infection
  • Recognise the clinical features of common bacterial infections, including impetigo, cellulites, folliculitis, boils
  • Recognise rarer bacterial infections such as staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome, toxic shock syndrome, necrotising fasciitis
  • Describe how to investigate a patient with suspected bacterial infection
  • Formulate a management plan for a patient with a bacterial infection
  • List the main viruses involved in skin disease
  • Recognise the clinical features of common viral infections, including herpes simplex, varicella zoster, measles, rubella, viral warts, molluscum contagiosum
  • Be able to counsel a pregnant woman who has had contact with chickenpox, rubella
  • Describe the specific problems that viruses may cause in patients with eczema or the immunocompromised
  • Discuss the treatment available for viral infections
  • Recognise fungal infections of the skin including tinea
  • Differentiate between fungal and yeast infections of the skin
  • Be able to do a fungal skin scraping
  • Discuss treatments available for fungal infection
