General principles of wound care

Introduction

 as dental surgeons we are extremely privileged in that most of the oral wounds that we treat are both hidden from plain sight, and heal spectacular well, despite the mouth being a contaminated region.

No one knows why that is.

In essence  the old surgical adage is that dilution is the solution to pollution.

What we mean by that is that when you get a dirty wound, then spend considerable time in clean the wound following injection of local anaesthetic.

The emergency doctor or nurse  or surgical teams around, will only be too pleased to advise you.

 quite a good tip for irrigating wounds is to attach a BLOOD GIVING set  to a bag of normal saline,  and use that as a surgical hosepipe to wash the wound.

It's important that you ask for a blood giving set because that is of a larger diameter, and therefore you can pump the sale and out much quicker, this can be increased still further by squeezing the litre bag of saline.
