9.2. Modern Languages - Two Languages

Language Combinations Available: Fr/Ger, Fr/Rus, Fr/Sp, Ger/Rus, Ger/Sp, Rus/Sp.
Students cannot take two Beginners languages.

60 credits of Core Language (two of the below):

  • French (FRE4204 Beginners / FRE4202 Post GCSE / FRE4200 Post A‑Level and Native Speakers)
  • German (GER4201 Beginners / GER4205 Post GCSE / GER4204 Post A‑Level and Native Speakers)
  • Russian (RUS4203 Beginners / RUS4201 Post A‑Level / RUS4202 Native Speakers)
  • Spanish (HSP4200 Beginners / HSP4201 Post A‑Level / HSP4202 Native Speakers)
  • SML4006 Culture and Language (30 credits)
  • 30 credits of options from the list below:
  • SML4203 Love Poetry in the Middle Ages: Literary Analysis and AI‑Assisted Creative Rewriting (15 credits)
  • SML4204 AI and Languages (15 credits)
  • SML4205 History and/as Fiction (15 credits)
  • SML4206 Understanding Contemporary Societies (15 credits)

60 credits of Core Language (the same as first year):

  • 30 credits of SML/FRE/GER/HSP/RUS‑coded modules at Level 5
  • 30 credits of optional modules at Level 5 from SML/FRE/GER/HSP/RUS-coded modules, modules from the School of the Arts or modules from another School in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

60 credits of Core Language (the same as first and second year):

  • French (FRE6202 All Levels)
  • German (GER6200 All Levels)
  • Russian (RUS6200 Beginners, Post GCSE and Post A‑Level / RUS6201 Native Speakers)
  • Spanish (HSP6201 All Levels)
  • 30 credits of SML/FRE/GER/HSP/RUS‑coded modules at Level 6
  • 30 credits of optional modules at Level 6 from SML/FRE/GER/HSP/RUS-coded modules, modules from the School of the Arts or modules from another School in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

  • You are required to take 120 credits in each academic year. It is not possible to take less or more than 120 credits.
  • Pay attention to the semester balance of modules, you will need to take 60 credits in each semester. A 75 credits in Semester 1 and 45 credits in Semester 2 split will only be considered in exceptional circumstances. Any other imbalance of module weightings will not be allowed.
  • You are strongly encouraged to take modules which match your current level of study i.e. Level 5 modules for Year 2, Level 6 modules for Final Year. If you do choose to request modules at a different level to your developmental year, do consider that this could have consequences which may effect your progression/classification.
  • Students entering their first year in Sept 2026 - You can only take modules at Level 4.
  • Students may choose an optional language module at a lower or higher level than their developmental year provided their language level is appropriate for the chosen level and their programme allows this option.
    • The School of Law and the School of Business and Management are not accepting elective requests.
    • The School of Society and Environment (subject areas: Geography, History and Politics) usually consider requests from students outside of their School.
