School of Mathematical Sciences UG Student Handbook 2025/26
QMplus version
Study Abroad
If you are a student from abroad studying at Queen Mary for a semester or a year then please see the information for incoming study abroad and Erasmus students on the School web site. Most of the information in this handbook is also relevant to you, but you will not formally be following one of our study programmes and your adviser is our study abroad coordinator.
If you are a Queen Mary student who would like to study abroad for one whole year of after your second year then please see the information about the international exchange programmes on the Queen Mary web site. Please note that we require you to achieve a first-year average mark of at least 60 in order to be sure that you can cope with the academic demands of studying abroad.
You can spend a year at one of our many partner institutions. The process to apply for destinations takes place centrally with the Global Opportunities Office and takes place the year prior to your exchange year.
Most of Queen Mary’s regular Bachelor programmes are available "with a year abroad" (WAYA), in which case you would spend your entire third year abroad. Alternatively, as a first-year student on a three-year degree programme, you could spend the first semester of your second year abroad.
Your exchange period will count towards your Queen Mary degree.
Different kinds of funding are available to support you for a learning period abroad. There is additional financial support for disadvantaged students. Read more about this on our Finance and also its subpages providing more detail on various funding sources.
Where you can go on exchange depends on your degree programme, the bilateral agreements Queen Mary has signed with our partner institutions, and for how long you want to go on exchange. Please note that not all institutions accommodate all degree programmes. You must discuss eligibility with your Dr Abhishek Saha, Academic Coordinator for the School of Mathematical Sciences who can note any restrictions for individual destinations before submitting any application to the Global Opportunities Office. For information about programmes with restrictions, please see the the following link - https://www.qmul.ac.uk/international/global-opportunities/outgoing-students/exchange-programmes/where-can-i-go/
