The module will provide an introduction to the range of methodologies in Business and Management research. We will begin with discussing the different epistemological and methodological perspectives of the area. This will be the basis for exploring how to search the relevant academic literature and identify interesting questions for research. Most of the module will then be devoted to exploring different methodological approaches to collecting and analysing data, with a focus on research simulations that allow you to apply these methods in practical, hands-on activities. The module will cover both quantitative (e.g. survey) and qualitative methods (e.g. interviews, focus groups). At the end of the module you should be able to appreciate the different methodological perspectives considering their scientific, political and cultural underpinnings. You will also be able to identify a relevant research topic and conduct an independent research project while being sensitive to issues of validity and reliability of your work’s outcomes. The seminar sessions will be based on experiential learning, with each session simulating key research activities. These activities will include designing a survey to collect quantitative data, conducting interviews to explore in-depth qualitative insights, and facilitating focus groups to engage participants in collaborative discussions. Through these exercises, students will gain hands-on experience in applying methodological principles to practical research scenarios. The seminars will also help you understand the nature of the module’s assessments and provide feedback.
