This module is a comprehensive introduction to the field of data mining. The aim is learning the fundamental concepts and practical techniques for extracting information and knowledge from data sets. The module will cover all the major steps in a data mining pipeline. We start by learning how to represent, acquire, and store data. We then gain familiarity with visualisation techniques, exploratory data analysis, and classical machine learning techniques like classification, regression and clustering. The emphasis will be on concepts, including how to evaluate and interpret data mining results, Next, we delve into some specific data-mining techniques, namely, frequent pattern-mining and anomaly detection. Finally, we explore some application-specific examples of data mining in real everyday life, and finish with a discussion of ethical and policy issues related to the use of data.
