This module examines how gender impacts on management and work, resulting in men’s and women’s differential participation across occupations and in senior positions in the private and public sectors. We will critically analyse modern workplaces and the assumptions we carry into work from an intersectional and feminist perspective. The module will discuss theory as well as empirical evidence seeking to explain persistent gender inequalities. We will analyse organisational practices and ask to what extent the way we do things at work takes into account the bodily differences between men and women. We will also uncover the gendered assumptions that underpin much of the organisation of work, examining how discourses of masculinity and femininity shape workplace experiences. To think about such questions, we will also look beyond the artificial division of the private and public sphere to consider how the division of labour in the household impacts on gender inequality in organisations.
