TASK 2: LOGARITHMS [1.5hrs]

Step 1. Very basic introduction to logarithms (you can skip this video if you already know what logarithms are):

Step 2. Learn how to solve simple exponential equations by recognition method. First, try on your own to solve Worked examples 1.8 and 1.9 from the Mathematics B workbook - Chapter 1: Section 1.3.

If you have problems, watch this video (and attempt these Worked examples again):

Step 3. Now we are ready to introduce logarithms.

Watch the following videos

And go through Mathematics B workbook - Chapter 1: Section 1.3 and work through the remaining examples included therein (worked example 1.11 is interesting but you can skip it).

Step 4. Check your solutions by using Mathematics B workbook - Chapter 1 solutions, Section 1.3.

Step 5. You can find more information in [J. Olive Survival guide, Chapter 3, Section 3C(c,d)], or [Bostock,Chandler Core Maths, Chapters 2, 4 and 17, Ex 2E, 2F, 2G, Ex 4B, Ex 17B].

ADDITIONAL MATERIAL
Powers Laws and Rules for logs summary sheet

A side-by-side table of the power laws and rules for logarithms.

Additional Notes on Logs and Exponentials

Some more additional notes covering the background knowledge from basic definition of indices to exponential and logarithmic equation.

EXTRA EXERCISE: Try to match the rule from the table in the workbook with the rule given below in colour. Note some of the rules given in colour are a combination of two rules from the table.
