SEF Research Assistant Scheme
For a number of years the School has been successfully running the ‘Research Assistant Scheme’ that gives students the opportunity to become, for a period, a research assistant to a member of academic staff in the School of Economics and Finance.
This innovative scheme is unique among UK Universities and was originally proposed by one of our students a few years ago. He presented the idea of a research assistantship scheme to the Students Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC). The School discussed it and approved it. The scheme has proved successful since then and we are delighted to offer it again this year!
The Undergraduate Research Assistantship (UG RA) Scheme aims at developing students' capacity to conduct research and enquiry, while providing staff with support in carrying out their research. The UG RA scheme has received around 200 applications over the years and over 20 faculty members have recruited students enrolled in the scheme.
The scheme aims at attracting SEF best and most motivated (year-2 and 3) students. Students will receive first-hand exposure to research conducted by the faculty. Under the scheme, students will receive training and develop their skills in a number of research-related areas, from data collection, processing and handling to basic programming skills, statistical analysis and literature reviews on research-related topics. The scheme provides a number of attractive features for students interested in continuing their post-graduate education and strengthening their CV:
- Upon satisfactory completion of the assigned tasks, students enrolled in the UG RA scheme may receive a Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR), which provides verified information about their academic and non-degree related achievements.
- Working in close contact with SEF faculty members will allow students to establish connections with potential reference letter writers, which may be very important when applying to post-graduate programs. Several students enrolled in the UG RA scheme in the past have been admitted to top UK and international MSc programs.
