Marking work-based project

These are authentic assessments that are in play and some flexibility in the marking scheme needs to be exercised to how the learner has approached the assessment. Some learners might be limited to what they can do and who they can approach and the depth to which the information is shared in the reports due to compliance of organisations, also where appropriate general case studies are provided however when these are more specific towards the work context the depth as to how the student can express in the report is limited due to strict compliance. Situational/contextual adjustments are made by the marker in this case so some flexibility is designed into the marking schemes to address this.

Please note: diversity checks need to be applied in the specific context of EP delivery plans to ensure that EPA is suitable and accessible for all apprentices.

Some tips you may find useful:

  • Look to reward what is submitted - do not focus on what has not been included or what you would have produced under the same circumstances.
  • Make sure your judgements are explicitly linked to the standard, you cannot mark a project up or down based on criteria beyond the KSBs.
  • Assessment needs to be a transparent process for everyone involved, make sure that you share the reasoning behind your judgements in a way that can be understood by the EPAO so that they can see how you reached the final mark.
  • Remember that KSBs could be evidenced at any point in the project. Keep a copy of the relevant KSBs to hand while marking so that you can see these - don't assume an Apprentice will demonstrate KSBs in certain sections, instead be prepared for them to address them at any point in the submission.
