Many blind students will need a reader to read text aloud to them. Rather than asking a support worker to photocopy or scan reams of text the student may ask their academic support worker to read aloud various sections of text so that they can ascertain whether or not a particular chapter or section is relevant to their area of study.

It is important that you read aloud clearly - your student should provide advice and feedback, e.g. requests to read a particular sentence again, or to skip down a page until you reach a key word. This is where a familiarity with the subject is very useful and in many cases the same support worker takes notes in addition to supporting someone in the library so that they are familiar with the terminology and context of their work.

Other disabled students may require a reader for issues related to stamina.
