Dear GP Tutors,

We do hope this message finds you well and yours safe.

We are writing to thank you for the learning opportunities you have offered our student this academic year and to let you know we are thinking of your during these challenging times. As part of the Barts & the London Medical School community, we thought we would share the following update with you.

Update on students and the MBBS course

The final years students took their (slightly modified) exams just before the lock down began. The vast majority passed. I am sure you join us in congratulating them. The GMC is offering accelerated provisional registration so those who wish to can gain early entry into the Foundation Programme as a Foundation Interim Year 1 (FiY1) on a voluntary basis.

For years 1 to 4 we are providing what we can online.  Following the suspension of placements many students went home – some are now abroad. We are designing eLearning using existing modules (such as BMJ and eLearning for Health) as well as planning to deliver live webinars where possible. We have reduced assessment requirements to reduce stress for students and pressure on staff, although students welcome some deadlines and feedback to keep motivated.

GP Tutors - Your role

In the circumstance, both students and staff are anxious about how we will be able to make up for the lost GP Teaching and patient contact . We are aware that most practices are currently working to capacity, learning mastering new processes and info, and coping with staff illness. We also anticipate demand on GPs to increase over the weeks. Nonetheless, we know you wish to stay connected and support the students.

1.       Teaching availability 2020-21

Thank you to the amazing number of practices who have returned Teaching Availability details for next academic year. Please keep them coming! Our work of preparing tomorrow’s doctors will be more important than ever. Please click here for the link to the teaching preference form.

2.       Support for current students 2019-20 during lockdown

We have been contacted by a number of GP tutors offering to help during the lockdown. CBME will certainly need some help and we are looking at the options eg: join online webinars as co-tutors; marking and feeding back on student work; setting quizzes etc . We plan to send out a survey  in the next week or so :  watch this space.

3.       GP Tutor Training

We have cancelled our face-to-face events but are exploring option for online tutor development activities – including a possible Summer Education Day (or half day) via Zoom – more to follow.

Student Volunteers

We have list compiled a list of practices and students in collaboration with the Student Association. If you have an urgent need please email Chloe Milan, c.millan@qmul.ac.uk for a student volunteer – Currently we recommend they undertake: clerical, reception duties and telephone duties (checking on isolated or at risk patients).

We wish you and your team all the very best
