Dear Supervisors,
Please encourage your PGRs to participate in this year's 3MT competition. This is an excellent opportunity for them to develop key communication skills and to showcase their amazing reserach.
What is Three Minute Thesis?
Three Minute Thesis (3MT) challenges doctoral candidates to present a compelling spoken presentation on their research topic and its significance in only three minutes. First developed by the University of Queensland, Australia, 3MT is now run across the UK by Vitae.
What do PGRs get out of it?
Being able to communicate research to a broad audience is crucial. Communicating effectively and succinctly will help PGRs:
- secure research funding;
- work with stakeholders and the public;
- ensure their research has the impact they want it to have.
Communicating with non-specialist audiences is as much a skill as communicating with specialist audiences. PGRs have to take very technical and specialised knowledge and turn it into information anyone can understand. Participating in 3MT gives themu the opportunity to learn how to do this through supportive workshops.
How do PGRs sign up?
As a first step, please encourage your PGRs to register for one of the following 3MT Introduction sessions:
- Register for 29 January, 1-4pm session
- Register for 30 January, 1-4pm session
- Register for 12 February, 10am-1pm session
These sessions will introduce PGRs to the 3MT process and give them the opportunity to develop their research story.
