Hi all,

We have three fantastic supervisors training opportunities for you in term 2:

Supporting PGR mental health and wellbeing as a supervisor

As a PGR supervisor, you will have a unique working relationship with your PGRs and the supervisory relationship is one of the most crucial factors for successful thesis completion and submission. The doctorate can be a stressful process and we know that PGRs are more likely than other students (UGs and PGTs) to face mental health and wellbeing challenges.

You are likely to be aware of these challenges if they affect your PGRs, and they may turn to you for support. As a supervisor, however, you are not expected to act as a therapist or a GP! Understanding the extent of your responsibilities in these situations can be difficult, and this workshop aims to give you the tools and knowledge to support your PGRs and signpost them to relevant services when they need them.

Let's talk about mindset (for PGR supervisors)

The goal of this workshop is to give participants a taster of the insights that mindset awareness can bring. This will include how a person’s mindset can influence their responses, behaviours and habits, as well as influence others working around them.
The workshop will start with an introduction to growth and survival mindsets. In small groups we will discuss a scenario to explore how students might feel and act if they disagree with their supervisor. The group as a whole will then discuss possible responses and reflect upon how these might relate to growth and survival mindset traits. The workshop will conclude with some practices for growth to empower supervisors work more often from a mindset of growth.
During this session, you will have the opportunity to share experiences, and learn how you can influence outcomes by changing our response to individuals or events.

Intercultural communication

Being ‘culturally competent’ means having the knowledge and skills to be aware of our own cultural values and the implications of these for making respectful and reasoned decisions and choices. Cultural competence provides a set of approaches to help ensure that the needs of all people and communities are met in a responsive and respectful way.

This interactive workshop will help you understand and explore the topic of Cultural Competence, benefits of increasing cultural awareness, and discussing common challenges that arise in a working relationship between supervisors and their PGRs.
