Hi everyone!
Next week we will continue discussion on alternative status to the Convention refugee definition, looking at regional refugee definitions that are expanded or complimentary. You will find this also introduces discussion on people fleeing conflict. The readings for the seminar are focused on the Convention and people feeling armed conflict, with a more doctrinal paper from V Holzer. I have also included UNHCR's summary conclusions and a more academic text from H Storey on the 'War Flaw'.
Collaborative Activity
As was discussed at the end of today's seminar, your collaborative activity will require that you present regional/country specific approaches. The groups have been allocated below, please can the first person listed in each group initiate the email exchange. In your groups, you should select an academic text that will be uploaded to QMplus for the class to read. Please send this by Thursday, 14 November at 10.00. You will then give a 10-minute presentation in your groups. Please share the PowerPoint presentation by latest 22.00 on Sunday, 17 November.
Your presentation should address the regional/country specific refugee definition and the particular argument which the academic text puts forward. The text may choose to focus on the efficacy of the regional regime, gendered implications, conflict-refugees, or the historical development. You should include in your presentation:
- The differences of the refugee definition with the Convention definition.
- The focus or approach of the academic text.
- The core criticisms or reflections on the regional/country specific definition.
Moreover, consider whether this regional/country specific definition is a ‘complimentary’ definition, or may rather undermine the Convention.
