Dear all,

I hope you’re well and enjoying these first few weeks of this new (and final) Semester at QMUL!

As promised, here’s an email to explain what is taking place this week. Read carefully, and do get in touch if you still have questions.

Seminars for POL361 on 8 and 9 February will take place off campus. We will be visiting the exhibition The Cult of Beauty, currently on display at the Wellcome Collection (183 Euston Road, London NW1 2BE). You can check the Museum’s website for more information about how to get to there. You should make your way there independently. I or your seminar tutor will be waiting in the foyer area at the start of your seminar session. The visit will begin 5 minutes past the hour. Please note the site is accessible, but let us know if there are any requirements we should be aware of.

If the commuting time to/from the exhibition venue interferes with any other lectures/seminars you may have on the day, you are welcome to join any other group.

Please read this if you are enrolled on the Friday seminar at 2pm. Because the lecture is held on campus at 3pm, there won't be enough time for us to get back to QMUL on time. For this reason, you must join any of the other available slots on Thursday, 8 February (3pm/4pm/5pm) or Friday, 9 February (10am/11am/12pm).

Please note that the first assignment for this module, due on 21 February, requires you to have seen this exhibition. It may be a good idea to familiarise yourselves with assignment instructions before you attend the exhibition. These are available on QMPluse under the tab, Important Module Information. Email me at a.forte@qmul.ac.uk if you think you will miss the visit and it will be impossible for you to make alternative arrangements. If you wish to visit/revisit the exhibition in your own time, The Cult of Beauty is a free exhibition and will be running until Sunday, 28 April 2024.

I’ve compiled a brief document to read before you attend the visit (see attachment). This highlights important aspects to be mindful of before your Thursday/Friday sessions.

Finally, in last week’s lecture and seminar, I mentioned a pre-lecture Q&A session to cover any questions you may have with regards to the readings for Topic 2 (Rethinking Sex and Gender). This is voluntary for any student who would like an opportunity to discuss the readings for Topic 2 (Butler, Shahvisi and Hayem) in more detail. I will be in Room 1.06, Bancroft. There are 26 seats available, but you can also join online. This is the link to join Microsoft Teams meeting at 2pm:
