Dear students
I hope all of you are making good progress with your assignments. I thought it might be helpful to say again what is and what isn't essential so that everyone has the best chance of achieving a good mark.
NOT NEEDED
- Anything on the LEP accelerator technology (or accelerators at all) - just tell the reader the LEP beam details at the time of the experiment that you are discussing.
- Anything about other experiments, either at LEP or at the Tevatron or at the LHC.
- Any particle physics details about, for example, radiative corrections etc. to the fundamental processes by which the Z0 will decay to a lepton pair.
NEEDED
- An overall description of the detector you are discussing with appropriate diagrams.
- Detailed description of the relevant sub-detectors used in the reconstruction.
- Information about the actual (not the predicted) performance of the sub-detectors: impact parameter resolution. momentum and energy resolution, dE/dx (if measured and if relevant) performance etc.
- A clear description of how the Z0 is reconstructed from the final state leptons (either electrons OR muons depending on which channel you were assigned). Don't discuss the reconstruction of a Z0 from hadrons (jets) except if it forms a significant background to the leptons.
