Title: Intermittency
Supervisor:
Research Area: Dynamical Systems and Statistical Physics
Description:

Intermittency is a dynamical phenomenon where some regular motion, say a periodic oscillation, is interrupted in irregular intervals by complex chaotic behaviour. Such a regime provides a universal phenomenon for the transition to chaos and can thus be studied and explained by simple mathematical models, using tools from dynamical systems theory and stochastic processes. The project focusses on the study of so called on-off intermittency which can be explained in terms of multiplicative stochastic processes. Using either analytical techniques or numerical tools the corresponding universal scaling behaviour will be uncovered.
