Creative Writing Advanced Prose Fiction: Fiction for a Moment of Danger

Level 6 (15 credits)

This English with Creative Writing module will develop skills to understand and create prose fiction that responds to a contemporary 'moment of danger'. Such moments may be the result of social, political, environmental, or economic crises that demand response or representation by writers, whether in a realist mode or not. Students will study the content, form, and technique of narratives that respond to particular moments of danger (contemporary or historical), produce original short fiction that responds to a crisis of the present broadly construed, share work in progress with fellow students, and reflect critically on their creative process and influences. The module combines topic-based seminar teaching with workshops focused on students' creative outputs, which contribute to the final portfolio.

Preparing for this Module and Approximate Costs

There is no advance preparation required for this module. Once the reading list is released in autumn, you may wish to begin reading some of the set texts.

Primary texts may cost up to £50 if purchased new in recommended editions. Please note that these costs can often be reduced by purchasing items second-hand or borrowing them from the Library.

The full reading list will be confirmed in October 2020 to allow you time to source set texts and begin preparation over the winter break.
