GEG5126 Cultural Geographies

Module Convenor: Regan Koch

Module Level: 5

Semester: A

This module introduces the field of cultural geography: its substantive concerns, theoretical perspectives and methods. It begins with a broad understanding of culture, incorporating a plurality of ideas, practices and aesthetics the comprise the diversity of human life. Culture is understood as a medium of power, central to the construction of identity, social difference and inequality.

A geographical perspective emphasises the cultural processes and politics that produce spaces, places and landscapes, and how these in turn shape different cultures. The module is interdisciplinary in scope and explores a range of cultural landscapes through a focus on walking east London.

Key themes include urban lifestyles, cultures of consumption, and urban waterways. The overarching aim is that students will be prompted to reconsider and extend their own perspectives on cultural matters as they develop knowledge, intellectual tools and practical skills for making sense of the world around them.
