Title: Quaternary codes
Supervisor:
Research Area: Algebra
Description:

Ten years ago, Hammons et al. discovered that certain families of non-linear binary codes could be 'linearised' by regarding them as images under a naturally defined 'Gray map' of linear quaternary codes (codes over the integers mod 4). This gave rise to simpler constructions of these codes and to connections with many other parts of mathematics including symplectic and orthogonal geometry over finite fields and systems of lines in real or complex space. The project could involve constructing the codes, explaining the connections, and maybe thinking about generalisations.
