In this module, we will learn how an aircraft begins with a mission and gradually takes shape through key design decisions. We will explore how weight, lift, drag, wing size and engine choice work together to determine whether the aircraft can meet its mission. We will investigate how propellers and jet engines generate thrust and how their performance changes across the flight envelope. We will use simple design methods, performance charts and scaling laws to make realistic preliminary design decisions. We will also consider emerging propulsion technologies and the environmental challenges shaping future aircraft. By bringing together aerodynamics, propulsion and aircraft performance, we will see how the different parts of aerospace engineering interact in a real design problem. This will help us develop practical engineering judgement and prepare us for aircraft design projects and future work in aerospace engineering.
