The module will provide an introduction to the range of methodologies in Business and Management research. We will begin with discussing the different epistemological and methodological perspectives of the area. This will be the basis for exploring how to search the relevant academic literature and identify interesting questions for research. Most of the module will then be devoted to exploring different methodological approaches to collecting and analysing data. The module will cover both quantitative (e.g. survey research) and qualitative methods (e.g. case studies, interviews). At the end of the module you should be able to appreciate the different methodological perspectives considering their scientific, political and cultural underpinnings. You will also be able to identify a relevant research topic and conduct an independent research project while being sensitive to issues of validity and reliability of your work’s outcomes. The seminar sessions will be delivered in a lab format with emphasis on the use of research software like SPSS for quantitative analysis. The seminars will also help you understand the nature of the module’s assessments and provide feedback in your effort to design an independent research project.
