Take this test if you know some Arabic and your level is, roughly, post-beginner/ lower elementary (GCSE Arabic grade 3 or lower).
If your result is below 80%, enrol for Arabic 1 (4-hours-a-week course) or Arabic 1a (you can choose between a year-long 2-hour-a-week course and a one-semester 4-hour-a-week course). If your result is 80% or more, enrol for Arabic 1b. If your result is 90% or more, try the next test (Elementary) and see if your result is high enough to allow you to enrol for a higher stage.

If your result is below 80%, enrol for Arabic 2 (4-hour-a-week course, year-long) or Arabic 2a (you can choose between a year-long 2-hour-a-week course and a one-semester 4-hour-a-week course). If your result is 80% or more, enrol for Arabic 2b (4-hour-a-week course, offered in semester 2). If your result is 90% or more, try the next test (Intermediate) and see if your result is high enough to allow you to enrol for a higher stage.

If your result is below 80%, enrol for Arabic 2b (4-hour-a-week course, offered in semester 2). If your result is 80% or more, enrol for Arabic 3a (offered from 2023). If your result is 90% or more, try the next test (Upper Intermediate) and see if your result is high enough to allow you to enrol for a higher stage.

Take this test if you know Arabic and your level is, roughly, upper intermediate.
If your result is below 80%, enrol for Arabic 3a. If your result is 80% or more, enrol for Arabic 3b. Both modules will be offered from academic year 2023/24.

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU START: To help you enrol for the right module, please take the test from the following selection that corresponds to your level. If you find it's above your level, just try the test a level below. And if you find it too easy, try the next level up. The test helps ensure that you are in the right teaching group, so it should reflect your actual level of German. Don't use help or online resources to find the right answers, as that might skew the results and you may end up in the wrong group. When you have completed the test, click on 'Submit results'. You have only 1 attempt for each test, and a maximum of 20 minutes to complete each test. When the time is up and you have not yet submitted your results, the results will be submitted automatically. After submitting, you will see your results (Grade) as a percentage. Use that percentage to enrol for the right module on the Language Learning website, as explained below. You will get feedback and enrolment advice again, once you have submitted the test.

Take this test if you know some German and your level is, roughly, elementary level (a recent GCSE German grade 3 or lower).
If your Grade is below 80%, enrol for German 1 (4-hours-a-week course) or German 1a (you can choose between a year-long 2-hour-a-week course and a one-semester 4-hour-a-week course, taught in semester 1). If your result is 80% or more, enrol for German 1b (you can choose between a year-long 2-hour-a-week course (LAN4107) and a one-semester 4-hour-a-week course, taught in semester 2 (LAN4007).
If your result is 90% or more, try the next test (Lower Intermediate) and see if your result is high enough to allow you to enrol for a higher stage. You will see advice about what module to enrol for with the feedback you get at the end of the test.

Take this test if you know some German and your level is, roughly, lower intermediate level (you have done a recent GCSE German and achieved grades 4-9, or your level is A2 of the CEFR).
If your Grade shown after taking the test is below 80%, enrol for German 1b (you can choose between a year-long 2-hour-a-week course (LAN4107) and a one-semester 4-hour-a-week course, taught in semester 2 (LAN4007).
If your Grade is between 80 and 90%, please enrol for German 2a - this is a year-long 2-hour-a-week course (LAN5107). If you want to learn more intensively and progress more quickly, you can enrol for a course with two sessions each week (2 hours each), over one year (LAN5006) or over one semester (LAN5007).
If your result is 90% or more, try the next test (Intermediate) and see if your result is high enough to allow you to enrol for a higher stage. You will see advice about what module to enrol for with the feedback you get at the end of the test.
