  • Enrolment

    • The first step in becoming an official student of the University is to complete online enrolment. This is where you provide us with your academic and personal information and upload a photo for your student ID card.

For January 2021, all student enrolments will be completed online in absentia and you won't have to attend campus in order to become fully enrolled. The enrolment process is split into four (4) stages and is shown below

Stage 1: You will receive an email from the Admissions Team inviting you to complete Online Enrolment on MySIS

Stage 2: You should complete the Online Enrolment task. This is where you confirm with us your academic and personal information, upload a photo for your student ID card and provide us with a copy of your official identification.

Stage 3: Academic Registry will carry out checks on the information that you have provided to us via the Online Enrolment task. If we require clarification on anything we will be in contact with you. Otherwise, we aim to fully enrol or temporarily enrol you within 5 working days. We will notify you if it will take longer than this.

Stage 4: ID Card Collection – If you have been fully or temporarily enrolled then you will receive an email to invite you to your ID Card Collection session. This is optional and completely dependent upon your circumstances as to whether you wish to attend campus to pick up your ID card.

    • HELPFUL TIPS

      • Once you have access to MySIS, you’ll see that Online Enrolment is available via the 'My Enrolment' option on the menu.
      • Next, you’ll be asked to submit some academic and personal information; the form will ask for your term-time address but, if you don’t know it yet, enter your home address and update it on MySIS once you find out.
      • You can save your progress and revisit the site any time to update/change information before you submit the online form.

  • Advisor

    • Shelley's Teaching Philosophy circa 2001

The Key Staff deal with most student queries in general. We will also allocate a member of academic staff as your advisor and there is a programme director for each degree programme.

For straightforward administrative enquiries, you should normally ask the Education Services Team first. For general academic advice, you should normally ask your advisor first, who may refer you to the appropriate programme director, the Senior Tutor or the Student Support Officer. Their roles are described below.

HOW DO I KNOW WHO MY ADVISOR IS?

MySIS should show your current advisor, and these will be allocated shortly.  If you cannot find who your current advisor is then please contact the Education Services Team, maths@qmul.ac.uk. To contact your advisor please see Contact Information.

      ADVISOR'S ROLE

Your advisor's role is to give you information and advice during your studies; in particular to discuss your academic progress throughout your time at Queen Mary. You should get to know your advisor, since normally you should ask your advisor to act as a referee for job applications, etc. If possible, you will keep the same advisor throughout your time at Queen Mary. Your advisor is able to help you with any mathematical problems and also help with your module selections.

It is normally best to contact your advisor by email initially and then arrange a meeting if necessary. It is important that you discuss with your advisor any academic, financial, medical or other problems as soon as they arise. Your advisor can then refer you to the appropriate person within Queen Mary to deal with your problem, which you may also need to report to the Senior Tutor or the Student Support Officer; see below.

Students will be required to attend at least one meeting each Semester with their advisor to discuss academic progress and personal development aims and goals (the first meeting will take place in Welcome Week). Students will be contacted by advisors to arrange a mutually agreed date and time for the meeting to take place. Informal meetings can be arranged at any time during the academic year via email or student dropping by the advisors office.

The aim of the advisor-advisee relationship is to

    • ARRIVING IN THE UK

      EGATES AT THE AIRPORT

Students who are nationals of Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and the United States of America may be directed to enter the UK using the electronic gates (‘eGates’) rather than speaking to a Border Force Officer.

If you are a national of one of these countries and have already applied for a visa in your home country, and this has been granted as a sticker in your passport (‘visa vignette’), you may enter the UK through the eGates. You must keep a copy of your boarding pass/flight ticket as evidence of the date that you entered the UK. You will need evidence of the date you arrived in the UK in order to enrol at Queen Mary.

If you have not applied for a visa in your home country, and are requesting Short-term Student immigration permission on entry to the UK, you MUST NOT use the e-gates, because you will need a stamp in your passport from the Border Force Officer. If you are requesting permission as a Short-term Student on entry to the UK, you must speak to a Border Force Officer, and request a Short-term Student stamp to allow you to study in the UK.

      AIRPORT COLLECTION

      Global Ops Airport Collection

Due to COVID-19, we are unfortunately unable to run our usual Airport Collection service from Heathrow this year. However, there are several options that you can utilise to make your own way to Mile End campus.

      The three recommended options are:

      • Taxi - London's black cabs can be booked in advance, hailed on the street or picked up from taxi ranks. Minicabs (ordinary cars licensed as taxis) can be booked using the information on TfL’s website or via an app such as Addison Lee. You should never use an unbooked minicab.
      • Heathrow Express and Underground: change at Paddington for Hammersmith and City Line
      • London Underground: change at Holborn for Central Line

      SELF-ISOLATION

If you arriving in England from certain countries which are required by the government to self-isolate for a 14 day period under Covid-19 measures. Please see the information on the Advice and Counselling Service website including which countries are affected.

      BRP COLLECTION

If your Tier 4 leave has been granted for more than six months, you'll need to collect your BRP card from your chosen Post Office within 10 days of arriving in the UK. The nearest collection location to the Mile End campus is the Whitechapel Post Office (208A Whitechapel Road, Whitechapel, London, Greater London, E1 1BJ). For students travelling from certain countries who have to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival to the UK, the Home Office has stated that when you arrive in the UK you will not be penalised for being unable to collect your biometric residence permit (BRP) while coronavirus measures are in place. Please check the Advice and Counselling Service website for up to date immigration information.

      POLICE REGISTRATION

You may also need to register with the police if you are of a certain nationality (check your visa sticker in your passport, your Biometric Residence Permit or Home Office decision letter). Check the Advice and Counselling Service website for information on how to register
