    WELCOME TO THE MATHEMATICAL TECHNIQUES 4 (PHY6324) HOME PAGE

    The course will cover advanced topics in Mathematical Physics.

    It will be organized under two broad headings : Algebra and Analysis.

    Algebra: Group theory, finite and continuous groups, Lie algebras, representation theory.

    Analysis: Complex variables, contour integrals, residue theorem, Laurent series, special functions, asymptotic series.

    These two areas of mathematics interact in interesting ways in theoretical physics, e.g. quantum field theory which is the subject of a number of modules in the MSci/MSc programme in theoretical physics.

    Useful books:

    • For Algebra and Group Theory -
      • Group Theory - a Physicist's survey (Ramond) ;
      • Group theory in a nutshell for Physicists (Zee);
      • Group theory and its applications to physical problems (Hamermesh).
    • For Complex variables:
      • Mathematical Methods for Physicists (Arfken,Webber and Harris);
      • Schaum's Outline Series on Complex Variables (Spiegel).
      • Arfken,Webber,Harris also has some group theory.

    Pre-requisites: MT1-MT3 are essential pre-requisites. Physical Dynamics is highly encouraged. Students taking MT4 are expected to have obtained above 60 % in MT3.
