In this module, we will learn how aircraft respond to control inputs, disturbances and changes in flight conditions. We will study how an aircraft is trimmed and what makes it statically stable in both symmetric and asymmetric flight. We will then explore dynamic stability and the main flight modes that determine how an aircraft moves after a disturbance. We will use aerodynamic derivatives and simplified analytical models to predict aircraft behaviour in manoeuvres such as climb, descent, sideslip and banked turns. We will also examine how control surfaces and pilot inputs influence the aircraft response. A highly recommended, but not compulsory, one-day flight course at the National Flying Laboratory Centre will allow us to experience several of these flight-dynamics effects in a real aircraft. The module will help us connect mathematical models with real aircraft behaviour and develop skills useful in aircraft design, flight testing and aerospace engineering practice.
