This module provides an engagement with the sub-discipline of urban geography, focusing on contemporary cities and urban processes around the world. It explores the distinctive contribution that geographers and scholars in related fields have made to urban theory and analysis. It outlines the social and economic origins of urbanisation, and explores relations between population size, density and diversity. Drawing on a range of case studies from both the Global North and South, the module considers different ways of understanding and engaging with contemporary cities, as well as the problems and potentials of an increasingly urbanised world.
